Hybrid Inverters and battery storage

Hybrid inverters have been developed to integrate and control solar generation, battery storage and import and export from the system to the grid. App based monitoring and control can be replicated on the front screens such as on the image above of a Solis Hybrid Inverter. The hybrid inverter can be set to self use priority where it will prioritise the use of generated electricity within the home then charge the batteries with the excess generation then lastly when the batteries are full and there is still excess generation they may export power back to the grid potentially earning the owner money via the Smart Export Guarantee ( S.E.G ) that they have the opportunity to sign up to with their electricity provider providing that they meet certain criteria. 

Solar batteries

There are a bewildering amount of battery systems on the market today with seemingly new models appearing every month. Battery technology currently relies on Lithium ion chemistries with lithium Ion Phosphate (LiFeP04) a clear favourite at present, manufacturers quote its safety and longevity and generally offer 10 year warranties with up to 6000 charging cycles. If you were to average one cycle per day that could equate to 16.4 years of efficient life although time will only tell. Manufacturers also advertise the relevant benefits of hi voltage v low voltage batteries and other sales gimmicks but generally we need to steer towards well matched battery and inverter systems with a proven history or background,  and enough technical information to aid installation and set up.
